Remember that kid in your class who could never really sit still?  The one who might have stuttered when asked to read aloud, or who couldn’t read most of the words at all?  When asked to be quiet or during a test, that kid usually did the opposite.  That kid could have had a learning disability – and it probably went undiagnosed for a number of years, as many teachers and parents don’t know that these “behavioral problems” could actually be symptoms of a learning disability.

Kids who are eventually diagnosed with a learning disability – and no, I don’t mean kids who are just hyper, I mean kids who have a neurological disorder – don’t always get the treatment they need.  Whether it’s parents who are ashamed or uneducated about the disorder, or teachers/schools without enough resources, many children diagnosed with a learning disability simply don’t have access to the kind of help they need.

This is where Project Eye-to-Eye comes in.  The founders, David Flink and Jonathan Mooney, each have a form of learning disability.  As young students, they experienced shame and embarrassment when they couldn’t read the same way as their peers – or at all

The project aims to empower students labeled with a learning disability so that they can cope with their difference and become their own advocate.  Giving kids these kinds of tools teaches them more than just how to read, it teaches them how to be active in affecting change in the world around them.
