It’s bothersome, yet another price we pay for a stable job or well-situated home. But there’s another, more pernicious meaning of the word, one that is more than a mere annoyance of modern life.
Women all over the world have been victims to this kind of traffic, human traffic. A few weeks ago, I attended a benefit event for an organization called NightLight Ministry. Their main goal is to provide support for women and children who have been victims of human trafficking, sold or stolen and forced into prostitution. They give these women vocational training and use profits from the sale of jewelry made by them to fund the organization. It’s circular and sustainable, and one of the safest ways for a victim of human trafficking in Thailand to break free from the chains of slavery.
But it’s not just in faraway lands that women are abused in this manner. Theresa Flores was drugged and raped at 15 by a high school classmate in Dayton, Ohio. She was forced into prostitution by the classmates involved in the crime, under threat that they would expose the event and show photos of it to her family and friends. As a religious girl, she felt forced to acquiesce to their demands, rather than risk the shame and possible punishment from her family for losing her virginity. Now, as a mother of three and victims' advocate at a safehouse called Gracehaven (for girls under 18 who have been victims of sexual exploitation), she speaks out against this brutal crime and reminds us that even those living in our own backyard can be victimized.
There’s more to every story, and there are more stories to tell. But hopefully, eventually, these stories will only be about the past and not the present.
