Child prostitution is a domestic, not just international, issue
Friday, February 19, 2010 at 1:02PM In 2003, the UK passed a law that included life imprisonment as a possible penalty for anyone who pays for sex with a child. Here in the US, child prostitution laws also include a possible life sentence, but they only cover acts committed within the country's borders. In the UK, the law also extends to those traveling internationally. And therein lies the difference.
Why can't our country prosecute our citizens who cross the border and exploit children in other lands? Why can't we, as ostensibly one of the most advanced countries in the world, do our part to protect the global community?
There are innumerable children being used for the foul purpose of sexual exploitation around the world. Southeast Asia, Central America, Easter Europe, right down the street...everywhere, every day, children are being abused by adults in the most heinous way possible. Yet there is little done to actively stop the abuse.
Sure, there are laws. Yes, people are prosecuted. But not enough - of anything. We need to tighten our laws, just as they have in the UK. And we need to pursue, with the full strength of the appropriate agencies, anyone who engages in this behavior.
Victims of child prostitution are at a higher risk for developing mental and social functioning problems including criminal behavior, post traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, depression, and suicidal behavior. Think about it. Children are exploited, our society looks away, and then the kids grow up with problems that we as a community end up having to deal with: whether it's through the taxes we pay for social services, the donations we make to organizations that help the survivors, or the personal pain of knowing someone who has endured the abuse.
Why do it? Why not stop the problem before it exists? Why can't we make prosecution and punishment so extremely bad for offenders that they just stop doing it?
Someone has to make it stop, on behalf of every child who lives through the nightmare of sexual exploitation. Be part of the solution.
